Manu Chao's Clandestino was originally released in June 1998 on Virgin/Ariola and remains one of the best-selling French-released albums of all time. The former Mano Negra frontman assembled the record on the move between stays in Madrid, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and across Latin America, recording direct to an 8-track portable rig — the Studio Clandestino of the title — over a period of roughly two years. The result is a shuffling, multilingual travelogue switching between Spanish, French, English, Portuguese and Galician, stitched together with radio snippets, street sounds and recurring musical refrains that weave in and out across the tracklist.

The album opens with the title track Clandestino, immediately setting out its theme of migration and undocumented movement, and moves through Desaparecido, the pop-ska breakout hit Bongo Bong, Je Ne T'Aime Plus, Mentira, Welcome To Tijuana and Minha Galera — a fifteen-song stretch that blends reggae, ska, rumba, chanson and Latin folk without ever settling in one place for long. Credited throughout to Chao and his long-time collaborator Renaud Letang as co-producers, with mixing at Studios Ferber in Paris.

This Because Music reissue presents the album across two LPs in a gatefold sleeve, mastered by Greg Calbi at Masterdisk in New York and pressed at MPO in France.
