Description

Crack the Skye is the fourth studio album by Mastodon, a concept album about astral projection, wormholes and the spirit of Rasputin that marked the band's decisive move from sludge metal brutality into progressive rock ambition. The album's seven tracks unfold as a continuous narrative, with longer structures, cleaner vocals and more intricate arrangements than anything the band had previously attempted.

Oblivion opens with one of the band's most melodic vocal performances, its soaring chorus a dramatic departure from their earlier work. Divinations is driven by a banjo intro that gives way to crushing riffs. The Czar is the album's epic centrepiece, a ten-minute suite in four movements that moves through quiet reflection, driving aggression and atmospheric passages. The Last Baron closes the album with thirteen minutes of constantly shifting tempos and moods, one of the most ambitious tracks in modern metal.
