Description

The Blue Notebooks is the album that established Max Richter as one of the most important composers working at the intersection of classical music, electronics and ambient sound. Conceived as a protest against the Iraq War, the album is a meditation on violence and its aftermath, interspersing instrumental pieces with readings from Franz Kafka's The Blue Octavo Notebooks by Tilda Swinton.

The music moves between solo piano, strings, subtle electronic processing and Swinton's spoken word. On the Nature of Daylight has become one of the most widely used pieces of contemporary classical music in film and television, its slowly building string phrases creating an almost unbearable emotional weight. Written on the Sky pairs piano with ambient textures, while Shadow Journal and Horizon Variations explore the boundary between acoustic and electronic sound. This expanded 2LP edition includes additional material.
