Description

...And Justice for All is the fourth studio album by Metallica — James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted — released on 25 August 1988 on Elektra Records. It was the first Metallica album to feature Newsted following the death of Cliff Burton in a tour bus accident in September 1986. Recorded at One on One Studios in Los Angeles and mixed at Bearsville Studios, New York, the album represented a compositional leap into genuinely progressive territory: nine tracks averaging over seven minutes each, built from interlocking riff architectures, shifting time signatures and a lyrical focus on political and legal injustice, censorship, war and nuclear brinkmanship.

The album's stark, notoriously bass-light production — the result of Newsted's bass being heavily attenuated in the final mix — has become as much a part of its identity as the songs themselves. Despite this, ...And Justice for All was an immediate commercial and critical success, reaching number six on the Billboard 200 and becoming the first underground metal album to achieve significant US chart success. The single "One" — accompanied by Metallica's first music video — earned the band their first Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1990, while "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow" and the nine-minute title track remain among the most celebrated compositions in thrash metal.

This 2018 reissue on Metallica's own Blackened Recordings label presents the album newly remastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering, pressed on double 180-gram black vinyl and manufactured in the USA on Pallas pressing equipment. Includes a printed insert with lyrics, credits and band photograph, plus a digital download card.
