Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue is the best-selling jazz album of all time and one of the most influential recordings in the history of music. Released on Columbia in August 1959, it marked a decisive turn towards modal jazz, moving away from the complex chord changes of bebop in favour of scales and modes that gave the soloists unprecedented freedom. The result is music of extraordinary poise and beauty, recorded in just two sessions at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York.

The album opens with So What, built on a two-chord structure that became the template for modal jazz, and closes with Flamenco Sketches, a slow meditation on five scales. Between them, Freddie Freeloader swings with relaxed authority, Blue In Green is achingly lyrical, and All Blues rides a hypnotic 6/8 groove. The sextet -- Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums -- is among the greatest ensembles ever assembled.
