'Round About Midnight is the debut album by Miles Davis for Columbia Records, released in 1957 and widely regarded as one of the defining recordings of the hard bop era. It was the first studio document of Davis's legendary first great quintet — John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums — a group whose interplay would reshape the sound of modern jazz. Recorded across sessions at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in 1955 and 1956, the album takes its title from Thelonious Monk's iconic composition, which Davis had been performing live to devastating effect for several years.
