Description
Napalm Death's Scum was originally released on Earache Records in July 1987 and is the record that codified grindcore. The Birmingham band's debut compresses 28 tracks into little over half an hour, fusing hardcore punk, crust and extreme metal at an intensity no other group had attempted at the time. The album is famously split across two sides recorded by two entirely different line-ups, with drummer Mick Harris as the only common member.
Side A, recorded at Rich Bitch 8-track studio in Birmingham on 11th August 1986, features Nicholas Bullen on bass and vocals and Justin Broadrick on guitar, and includes Multinational Corporations, The Kill, the title track Scum, and You Suffer — at roughly one second, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the shortest song ever recorded. Side B, cut at the same studio in May 1987, introduces the line-up that became most associated with the band's early sound, with Lee Dorrian (later of Cathedral) on vocals, Bill Steer (later of Carcass) on guitar and Jim Whitely on bass.
This 2025 Plastichead exclusive reissue presents the album on limited edition white vinyl on Earache, with cover art by Jeff Walker.
