I Put a Spell on You is one of the defining albums of Nina Simone's extraordinary career, originally released in 1965 on Philips Records. Recorded in New York with arranger and conductor Hal Mooney and Horace Ott, it is the album on which Simone expanded most fully into the lush orchestral territory that would become one of her signatures — bold brass arrangements, sweeping strings and her own singular piano work underpinning a voice capable of conveying everything from playful abandon to devastating intensity.

The twelve tracks range from Simone's thrilling reimagining of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' title track — stripped of its theatrical irony and transformed into a genuine declaration of desire — to the French chanson of Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas", the bawdy blues of "Gimme Some" and the song that would become perhaps her most enduring legacy: "Feeling Good". Originally written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1964 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint, Simone's version — unhurried, monumental, accompanied by a brass arrangement of extraordinary drama — became the standard against which all subsequent recordings of the song are measured.

This 2016 Philips reissue presents the album on black vinyl in a full-colour replica sleeve, faithfully reproducing the original packaging for a new generation of listeners. This is a 180g Back to Black release, made in The Netherlands.
