Nina Simone Sings the Blues is one of the most celebrated albums of Nina Simone's career, originally released on RCA Victor in 1967. It is a raw, unadorned showcase for her at her most elemental — blues in the deepest sense, delivered with the full force of her extraordinary voice and piano, and a backing band of genuine distinction. Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson on guitar, Bob Bushnell on bass, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums, Ernie Hayes on organ and Buddy Lucas on harmonica and saxophone combine to create a sound that is both deeply rooted and entirely alive.

The album opens with the driving, percussive "Do I Move You?" — one of the most direct and irresistible songs Simone ever recorded — and moves through material that ranges from the brooding "In the Dark" and the stately "My Man's Gone Now" to "The Backlash Blues", written for Simone by Langston Hughes as a commentary on racial injustice. "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and the closing "Blues for Mama" round out a set that goes back to the very essence of the blues — honest, unadorned and deeply felt.
