Hi-NRG originated in American gay clubs in the late 1970s and early 1980s, blending the driving pulse of disco with synth-led electronic instrumentation and an unrelenting, euphoric energy. By the mid-1980s it had crossed firmly into the mainstream, producing some of the most instantly recognisable and endlessly replayable pop hits of the era — and this compilation brings together the very best of them.

The tracklist is a masterclass in 1980s dancefloor sequencing. The Communards with Sarah Jane Morris open the set with one of the decade's most powerful vocal performances on "Don't Leave Me This Way". Dead or Alive's iconic "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" follows, alongside Bananarama's "Love In The First Degree", The Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men" and the irresistible "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" from Boys Town Gang. Side two opens with Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" — one of the most controversial and commercially unstoppable singles of the decade — followed by Kim Wilde's "You Keep Me Hangin' On", the extraordinary Liza Minnelli Pet Shop Boys collaboration "Losing My Mind", and London Boys' "Requiem".
