Masterplan is the B-sides and rarities collection that Oasis released in 1998, gathering tracks recorded during the fertile mid-1990s period that produced Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? — and it stands, by any honest measure, as one of the finest compilation records in British rock. The conceit of B-sides collections is usually that they document the margins of a career; in Oasis's case, the margins were as strong as the centre. The songs gathered here were cast off from singles not because they were inferior but because the A-sides happened to be "Supersonic", "Some Might Say" and "Wonderwall", which is to say they were cast off because Noel Gallagher was producing work at a rate that would have stocked any other band's albums twice over.

The standout tracks include "Acquiesce", a dual-vocal Noel-and-Liam piece that many fans consider the best song the band ever recorded, its chorus arriving with the force of something that had been waiting years to be written; "The Masterplan", a piano-led acoustic track of genuine tenderness that shows a side of Noel's writing largely absent from the studio albums; "Half the World Away", later used as the theme to the BBC television series The Royle Family and one of the most perfectly weighted ballads in the British songbook; and "Talk Tonight", an intimate acoustic piece Noel wrote in San Francisco during the band's first American tour. This 2023 anniversary pressing on gatefold double vinyl presents the collection as it deserves — with the space and weight the songs warrant.
