Junk Culture is the fifth album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), released in 1984 on Virgin Records, and in many respects the record that marked the end of their first, most artistically daring phase. It arrived two years after Architecture & Morality — which had contained their two most celebrated songs, "Souvenir" and "Joan of Arc", and established them alongside Depeche Mode and the Human League as the architects of British synth-pop — and the title itself acknowledged the tension the band felt between the serious electronic art-pop ambitions of their early work and the commercial pressures of the mid-1980s pop marketplace.

The result was a record that sat interestingly between those poles, containing both "Locomotion" — one of their biggest hits, a piece of driving, anthemic synth-pop with an irresistible forward momentum — and more reflective, experimental material. The half-speed master reissue process, in which the record is cut at half the playback speed so that the cutting lathe has twice the time to inscribe detail into the groove, is particularly suited to the dense, layered synthesizer productions of this era, allowing bass frequencies and high-frequency detail to be captured with far greater fidelity than conventional mastering allows.
