Description

The soundtrack to Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 film Blow-Up is one of the most remarkable and culturally significant film music recordings of the decade — a document of London at the precise cultural moment of its greatest international prestige, when the city's fashion, music and visual arts scenes were converging in a blaze of creative energy that briefly made it the centre of the world. The film itself, a meditation on image, reality and perception set in the swinging London of fashion photography studios and Carnaby Street boutiques, required a soundtrack that was both credibly of that world and sufficiently idiosyncratic to serve Antonioni's detached, European sensibility.

Herbie Hancock's jazz score — his first film work — is extraordinary: cool, sophisticated, harmonically advanced music that serves the film's ambiguities perfectly without disappearing into the background. The Yardbirds' appearance in the film, performing "Stroll On", is one of the iconic moments in the documentation of the British beat boom — the clip captures Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page playing together, one of very few filmed records of that brief configuration of the band. This Music On Vinyl reissue makes one of the genuinely important soundtracks of the 1960s available in high-quality vinyl form.
