Description
Diary Of A Madman is Ozzy Osbourne's second solo album and the last recording guitarist Randy Rhoads completed before his death in March 1982. Released in November 1981 on the back of the runaway success of Blizzard Of Ozz, it reunited the same touring line-up — Ozzy, Rhoads, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake — in a studio that had had a year to grow together, and the playing tells.
The album opens with the hook-laden Over The Mountain and Flying High Again, two of the heaviest-rotation singles of Ozzy's solo catalogue. Between them sits the ballad You Can't Kill Rock And Roll, the sprawling Believer, and the Middle-Eastern-tinged Little Dolls. Side two closes on Tonight, S.A.T.O. and the title track, the latter of which is as close as metal in 1981 got to a Bartók-inflected mini-concerto, with its classical-guitar intro, shifting time signatures and choral coda.
This 180g remastered LP reissue, released in 2022 on Epic / Legacy, is pressed in Europe and uses the restored original Daisley / Kerslake rhythm tracks.
