Description

Dancepieces is a collection of Philip Glass's work for the dance stage, released by CBS Masterworks in 1987 and drawing on two major collaborations: the music Glass wrote for Twyla Tharp's In The Upper Room and three "Glasspieces" that sit around Jerome Robbins' New York City Ballet production Glass Pieces and the opera Akhnaten. It remains one of the most approachable entry points into Glass's catalogue, capturing the moment his music crossed fully from downtown minimalism into the classical and operatic mainstream.

Side one holds the five In The Upper Room dances — I, II, V, VIII and IX — all propulsive arpeggios, interlocking synth lines and stacked woodwinds. Side two presents the three Glasspieces: the patient block-chord Rubric, the cycling soprano-saxophone-over-strings of Facades (one of Glass's most widely recognised pieces), and the Funeral from Akhnaten.

This Music On Vinyl 180g LP reissue restores the album to vinyl in a high-quality pressing, released in 2020.
