Description
Solo Piano is Philip Glass's own recording of his most personal piano works — the only album on which the composer himself performs a full programme of his solo piano music for CBS Masterworks. Issued in 1989 and still widely considered the definitive reading of this material, it has become one of the most-played records in the modern-classical / neoclassical crossover world, audibly influencing everyone from Nils Frahm to Ludovico Einaudi.
The record centres on the five Metamorphosis pieces — originally written in 1988 for Errol Morris's documentary The Thin Blue Line and for a stage adaptation of Kafka's short story of the same name. Around them sit Mad Rush, a steadily unfolding piece Glass first played for the Dalai Lama's 1981 visit to New York, and the earlier Wichita Vortex Sutra, a setting of Allen Ginsberg.
Pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Industry in the Netherlands for Music On Vinyl, this 2014 reissue brings the album back in an audiophile cut suited to its spacious, unadorned piano recording.
