Description
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the thirteenth studio album by Pink Floyd, originally released on 7 September 1987 on EMI and Columbia Records. It was the first Pink Floyd album made without Roger Waters, who had left the band in 1985 and attempted legally to prevent Gilmour and Mason from continuing under the name. With Richard Wright returning as a session musician (he would be reinstated as a full member for the subsequent tour), Gilmour assembled a team of collaborators including co-producer Bob Ezrin and a roster of session players to create an album that reasserted Pink Floyd as a going concern.
The original release was a massive commercial success, selling over four million copies and launching a world tour that ran for two years. However, Gilmour was never fully satisfied with the production, feeling that the heavy use of session musicians and 1980s studio technology had dated the sound. This 2021 remixed and updated edition addresses that directly: Gilmour and long-time Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson went back to the multitrack tapes and rebuilt the album, replacing many of the programmed drums and session parts with performances by Nick Mason and Richard Wright sourced from the subsequent live tour recordings.
The result is an album that sounds warmer, more organic and more like a band record. Learning to Fly retains its soaring, atmospheric quality but now breathes more naturally. On the Turning Away is given greater emotional depth. Sorrow opens with one of Gilmour's most powerful guitar statements, and deeper cuts like Yet Another Movie and A New Machine benefit significantly from the updated arrangements. Half speed remastered at 45 RPM and pressed on 180g vinyl across two LPs in a gatefold sleeve - the 45 RPM cut speed allows for wider grooves and greater dynamic range.
