Description
A Saucerful of Secrets is the second studio album by Pink Floyd, released on 29 June 1968 on Columbia (EMI). It occupies a unique place in the band's history as the only album to feature all five members: founding frontman Syd Barrett, whose declining health was making his contributions increasingly erratic, and his replacement David Gilmour, who had joined the band in January 1968 to provide musical stability on stage and in the studio.
The album marks the beginning of Pink Floyd's transition from Barrett's whimsical psychedelia towards the expansive, experimental approach that would define their classic period. Let There Be More Light and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (the latter a Roger Waters composition that became a live staple for years) point clearly toward the band's future, while Barrett's Jugband Blues - with its poignant, self-aware lyrics and sudden orchestral breakdown - serves as his farewell to the group.
The title track itself is a 12-minute suite of abstract sound, built from studio experiments and improvisation, that anticipates the long-form compositions of Atom Heart Mother and beyond. This 2019 mono remaster on Pink Floyd Records/Parlophone presents the album as it was originally mixed for its mono release, pressed on 180g vinyl.
