Description

Ummagumma is the fourth release by Pink Floyd, originally issued on 25 October 1969 on Harvest Records. It is a double album: the first disc captures the band live at Mothers Club in Birmingham and the Manchester College of Commerce, while the second is a studio album in which each member was given half a side to fill with solo compositions. It remains one of the most unusual and divisive records in the Floyd catalogue.

The live disc is a powerhouse. Astronomy Domine and A Saucerful of Secrets are extended into long, dynamic performances that show why Pink Floyd's live reputation was growing so rapidly in 1969. Careful with That Axe, Eugene builds from a whisper to a terrifying crescendo, and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is a hypnotic, gong-laden meditation. These recordings capture the band at a transitional peak, moving beyond Syd Barrett's psychedelia into the expansive improvisation that would define their 1970s work.

The studio disc is more experimental. Richard Wright's Sysyphus moves through four distinct movements of piano and organ textures. Roger Waters contributes the gentle acoustic Grantchester Meadows and the tape-collage Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict. David Gilmour's The Narrow Way explores guitar layering across three parts, and Nick Mason's The Grand Vizier's Garden Party is a percussion and effects suite in three movements.

This Japanese import collectors edition is pressed on 180g vinyl across two LPs in a high-quality gatefold sleeve, with a Japanese-language insert, full-colour booklet and traditional obi-strip.
