Description
The Works is the eleventh studio album by Queen, released on EMI and Capitol Records. After the divisive synth-heavy experiment of Hot Space, The Works represented a deliberate return to guitar-driven rock while retaining the electronic polish that reflected the sound of the era. It was a major commercial success, reaching number two in the UK and spawning four hit singles.
Radio Ga Ga became one of Queen's most iconic later-period songs, its synth-pop arrangement and anthemic chorus making it a natural fit for the band's legendary performance at Live Aid the following year. I Want to Break Free, driven by John Deacon's bass line and a memorable Moog synthesizer hook, became a worldwide smash (and its cross-dressing video became one of the most recognisable in music history). Hammer to Fall is a classic Brian May rocker about nuclear anxiety, and It's a Hard Life is an operatic ballad that harks back to the A Night at the Opera era.
The album was largely recorded at Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles and Musicland Studios in Munich, with the band producing alongside Mack. This 180g reissue presents the album on heavyweight vinyl.
