This is Lang Lang's orchestral debut recording, a live performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, captured at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on 22 August 2001. Originally released on CD by Telarc, this Craft Recordings reissue presents the recording on 180 gram vinyl for the first time.

The Third Concerto is the most technically demanding work in the standard piano repertoire, and Lang Lang's Proms performance -- delivered when he was just nineteen years old -- announced him as one of the most formidable pianists of his generation. The first movement's Allegro ma non tanto opens with a deceptively simple melody that unfolds into passages of extraordinary virtuosity. The Intermezzo: Adagio is lyrical and introspective, while the Finale: Alla breve drives towards an electrifying conclusion. The second disc pairs the concerto with a programme of solo Scriabin etudes, recorded at Oberlin College, spanning works from Op. 2, Op. 8, Op. 42 and Op. 65.
