Description

Truelove's Gutter is the fifth studio album by Richard Hawley, released on 21 September 2009, and widely considered the most profound and emotionally searching record of his career. Named after an ancient street in his native Sheffield — now thought to be the location of present-day Castle Street, allegedly named after 18th-century innkeeper Thomas Truelove — the album represents a decisive turn inward. Where his previous albums had built towards lush orchestral arrangements, Truelove's Gutter strips nearly everything away, leaving only sparse instrumentation, uncommon textural elements — including waterphone, megabass and cristal baschet — and Hawley's voice at its most exposed and intimate.

The eight tracks, spread luxuriously across four sides of vinyl, share a mood of profound nocturnal melancholy. "For Your Lover Give Some Time" — released as the album's first single — is among the most beautiful things Hawley has ever recorded, while "Soldier On", "Don't You Cry" and the near-ten-minute "Remorse Code" explore love, loss and grief with a directness that never tips into sentimentality. AllMusic called the album "a singular moment in Hawley's catalogue — quietly passionate, graceful, elegant, utterly moving." The Daily Telegraph described Hawley as "the country's most accomplished songwriter." The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

This reissue is pressed on transparent amethyst vinyl — an exclusive colour variant — in a gatefold sleeve with booklet.
