Description
Street Songs is the fifth studio album by Rick James and the record that made him one of the biggest stars in popular music. Selling over three million copies, the album established James as the dominant force in early-1980s funk, blending raw street energy with Motown polish and an unapologetic attitude that anticipated the swagger of hip-hop.
Super Freak is one of the most sampled and recognisable funk tracks ever recorded, its bassline later forming the foundation of MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." Give It to Me Baby was an equally massive hit, its call-and-response chorus and driving rhythm making it a dancefloor staple. Ghetto Life takes a more serious turn, addressing urban hardship over a tough, spare groove. Fire and Desire, a duet with Teena Marie, is one of the great soul ballads of the era.
