Strong Persuader is the breakthrough album by Robert Cray, winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording and establishing Cray as the most important blues guitarist of his generation. Where many of his contemporaries looked backward, Cray pushed the blues forward with tight song writing, soulful vocals and a clean, stinging guitar tone that owed as much to Curtis Mayfield as to Albert Collins.

Smoking Gun became a crossover hit, its taut groove and sharp lyric making it one of the defining blues tracks of the 1980s. Right Next Door (Because of Me) is a masterpiece of narrative songwriting, telling a story of infidelity from the perspective of the guilty party. Nothin' But a Woman and I Guess I Showed Her showcase the band's ability to lock into tight, Memphis-influenced grooves, while Foul Play strips back to a slow, intense burn.
