async is a solo album by Ryuichi Sakamoto, his first in eight years and the first following his treatment for throat cancer. Conceived as an imaginary film soundtrack -- music for a film by Andrei Tarkovsky that does not exist -- the album is a deeply contemplative work that explores texture, silence and the boundary between musical and non-musical sound.

The fourteen tracks range from delicate piano pieces to dense electronic soundscapes incorporating field recordings, organ tones and processed noise. andata opens the album with a fragile, dissonant piano figure. fullmoon layers sustained organ chords into a slowly shifting mass of sound. Life, Life builds around a reading from a Paul Bowles text. garden uses birdsong and environmental recordings alongside synthetic tones. The album was widely acclaimed as one of Sakamoto's finest works, a meditation on mortality, nature and the consolation of art.
