Description

South of Heaven is the fourth studio album by Slayer, produced by Rick Rubin. A deliberate departure from the all-out velocity of Reign in Blood, the album introduced slower tempos, more varied dynamics and an atmosphere of creeping dread that expanded the band's sonic palette without compromising their heaviness.

The title track South of Heaven opens with a clean guitar arpeggio -- an unexpected choice from a band known for maximum aggression -- before building into a grinding, mid-tempo riff. Mandatory Suicide is one of the album's most powerful tracks, balancing speed with a memorable chorus. Silent Scream and Ghosts of War bring back the full-throttle intensity of the previous record, while Spill the Blood is the album's most atmospheric moment, with Araya delivering an almost melodic vocal. The inclusion of a cover of Judas Priest's Dissident Aggressor pays homage to one of thrash metal's key influences.
