Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins, released as a double album on Virgin Records. It is one of the most ambitious alternative rock records ever made: 28 songs across two themed discs, subtitled Dawn to Dusk and Twilight to Starlight, ranging from furious punk energy to delicate orchestral balladry, psychedelic experimentation and electronic textures. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and has sold over ten million copies worldwide.

The album opens with the instrumental title track, a gentle piano piece that gives way to the soaring Tonight, Tonight, one of the defining songs of 1990s rock, with its sweeping string arrangement by David Campbell. Bullet with Butterfly Wings is a raw, cathartic anthem built around one of the era's most quotable lyrics. 1979 trades guitars for dreamy electronic production and became a massive crossover hit. Zero and Bodies are brutally heavy, Thirty-Three is achingly beautiful, and Porcelina of the Vast Oceans is an eight-minute masterclass in dynamics. The album closes with Farewell and Goodnight, a lullaby with each band member taking a vocal turn.

This 2012 remastered box set on Virgin presents the full double album across four LPs with a 36-page full-colour art book and a 28-page lyric book with illustrations.
