Description

Son House is one of the most important figures in the history of the blues. A contemporary of Charley Patton and Willie Brown, and a direct influence on both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, his raw, impassioned vocal style and driving slide guitar defined the sound of the Mississippi Delta. Raw Delta Blues is a 24-track compilation spanning his earliest recordings, from the 1930 Paramount sessions through his legendary 1941-1942 Library of Congress recordings captured by Alan Lomax.

The collection opens with Death Letter Blues and includes essential performances such as Special Rider Blues, Walking Blues and John The Revelator. House's vocal intensity is extraordinary throughout -- his singing has a raw, almost possessed quality that no studio polish could replicate. This Not Now Music edition presents the recordings across four sides of 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, with sleeve notes by Nigel Cross.
