Description
Down and Out Blues collects essential recordings by Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller), the Arkansas-born harmonica player and vocalist who became one of the most distinctive and influential artists on the Chess Records roster. His tone was unlike anyone else's -- breathy, conversational, sometimes muttering and half-spoken, with a sly wit that made every lyric sound like a private aside.
Don't Start Me to Talkin' is one of the great Chess singles, its shuffling rhythm and Williamson's laconic vocal delivery making it an instant classic. Fattening Frogs for Snakes showcases his gift for vivid, metaphorical lyrics. Nine Below Zero is a slow, brooding harmonica showcase, while Cross My Heart and The Key (To Your Door) demonstrate the depth and range of his work during this peak period at Chess.
This edition features the complete album + five bonus tracks.
