Description

Sugarhill Gang is the debut studio album from the Sugarhill Gang, originally released in 1980 on Sugar Hill Records. The group — Big Bank Hank, Master Gee, and Wonder Mike — had already changed the course of popular music with Rapper’s Delight, the 1979 single that introduced hip-hop to the mainstream and became the genre’s first top forty hit in the US. The album builds on that foundation with extended grooves like the nine-minute Sugar Hill Groove and Rapper’s Reprise (Jam Jam), alongside the funk-driven Here I Am and Bad News Don’t Bother Me.

Produced by Sylvia Robinson, Billy Jones, and Nate Edmonds at Sugar Hill Records, with a house band featuring Skip McDonald and Bert Williams on guitar, Doug Wimbish and Bernard Rowland on bass, Keith LeBlanc and Brian Horton on drums, and Skitch Smith on keyboards. The album includes both the full-length and single versions of Rapper’s Delight.

This 2026 reissue on Music On Vinyl is a limited and numbered edition of 1,000 copies, pressed on Clear & Blue Marbled vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. Licensed from BMG Rights Management. Manufactured and distributed by Music On Vinyl B.V.
