Toxicity is the second studio album by System of a Down, produced by Rick Rubin on Columbia Records. Building on the frenetic energy of their self-titled debut, the album added greater melodic range and political depth, drawing on the Armenian-American heritage and activist convictions of vocalist Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian.

Chop Suey! became the band's signature track, its quiet-loud dynamics and Tankian's rapid-fire vocal shifts making it one of the most distinctive singles of the early 2000s. Prison Song opens with a blunt statistical critique of the American prison system. Toxicity balances delicate verse melodies against a crushing chorus, while Aerials closes the album with an expansive, atmospheric arrangement. Bounce and Deer Dance showcase the band's ability to shift between chaos and precision within a single track.
