Description

It's My Life is Talk Talk's second studio album and the record that transformed them from a promising synth-pop act into one of the most artistically significant British bands of their generation. Released on 2 March 1984 on EMI, it marked a decisive creative shift — producer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Friese-Greene joined the band for the first time, becoming an unofficial fourth member and a major creative force for the remainder of the band's existence. Keyboardist Simon Brenner departed, and the group moved deliberately away from the polished New Romantic sound of their debut towards something warmer, more soulful and considerably more ambitious.

The results were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. The title track "It's My Life" became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic — its melodic urgency and Mark Hollis's distinctive vocal performance making it one of the defining singles of 1984. It was later covered by No Doubt in 2003, reaching number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and introducing Talk Talk to an entirely new generation. "Such a Shame" — reportedly inspired by Luke Rhinehart's cult novel The Dice Man — became a Top 10 hit across Europe, while "Dum Dum Girl" also performed strongly on the continent and in New Zealand.

Beyond the singles, the album rewards close listening throughout. The lush, atmospheric production by Friese-Greene and the band gives It's My Life a depth unusual for pop music of its era, with Hollis's emotionally direct vocals anchoring even the most sonically complex arrangements. "Tomorrow Started" and "Does Caroline Know?" are particular highlights, and the gentle, hypnotic closer "It's You" hints at the extraordinary direction the band would take on The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden.

This 2017 Parlophone reissue is pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl and comes in a picture sleeve reproducing the original artwork illustration by James Marsh, the artist who created the iconic covers for all five Talk Talk studio albums.
