Description

I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It is the second studio album by The 1975 — Matty Healy (vocals, guitar), Adam Hann (guitar), George Daniel (drums) and Ross MacDonald (bass) — released in February 2016 on Dirty Hit under exclusive licence to Polydor Records, and one of the most commercially and critically successful British albums of the decade. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the Billboard 200 simultaneously — making The 1975 the first British act since The Beatles to achieve this with their second album — and went on to sell over two million copies worldwide. It was named album of the year by NME, Rolling Stone, DIY, The Line of Best Fit and numerous other publications, and has since been ranked among the finest British albums of the 2010s.

Recorded and mixed at Ravenscourt Studios on Askew Road in London and The Ranch in Woodland Hills, California between February and November 2015, and mastered at Sterling Sound in New York City, the album is a deliberately ambitious expansion of the guitar-driven indie pop of the band's 2013 self-titled debut. Drawing on 1980s pop, ambient electronica, R&B, gospel and jazz, it operates without tonal consistency as a stylistic principle: the monochrome black-and-white aesthetic (the artwork, the videos, the staging) provides visual unity while the music ranges freely across "Please Be Naked" (a near-ambient piano instrumental), "If I Believe You" (a gospel choir piece with strings arranged by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson), the R&B-inflected "Somebody Else", and the propulsive new wave of "The Sound" and "Love Me". The album also features contributions from a gospel choir curated by Neilly Dickerson.

The singles were commercially dominant. "Love Me" — released October 2015 as the lead single — reached number 14 in the UK and demonstrated the album's range immediately; "The Sound" followed, reaching number 14 in both the UK and US Alternative Charts and becoming one of the most-played tracks on UK radio in 2016; "Somebody Else" became the album's most enduring track, a slow-burning piece of synth-pop heartbreak that has accumulated over one billion Spotify streams; "UGH!" and "A Change of Heart" completed the single campaign. The album's two purely instrumental tracks — the opening "The 1975" (a reprise of the ambient title track that opens all their albums) and the wordless "Please Be Naked" — serve as structural palate-cleansers that prevent the 17-track sequence from feeling cluttered, and demonstrate a confidence in pacing unusual in an act of the band's commercial profile.

This EU pressing on Dirty Hit / Polydor is the most sought-after pressing of this album, manufactured at Optimal Media GmbH in Germany and widely regarded by collectors as superior in sound to the US Interscope / Rainbo pressing of the same period. The 2× 180 gram clear vinyl is presented in a gatefold sleeve with individual printed lyric inner sleeves for each record, and includes a digital download card. The dead wax of Side D carries an etched message reading "HEY KIDS! WE'RE ALL JUST THE SAME, WHAT A SHAME" — a characteristic touch of self-aware wit.
