Description
Give 'Em Enough Rope is The Clash's landmark 1978 sophomore album — a record that exploded punk's limits and announced the band as one of the most vital forces in rock. Produced by Sandy Pearlman (of Blue Öyster Cult fame), the album's expansive, arena-ready sound was controversial at the time but has since proven its enduring power across decades of listening.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and was voted Album of the Year by Rolling Stone, Time, and UK weekly Sounds — a rare transatlantic consensus. Joe Strummer's furious snarl, Mick Jones' razor-sharp riffs, Paul Simonon's thunderous bass and the explosive drumming of Topper Headon — making his Clash album debut here — combine to create an album of genuine urgency and ambition.
Standout tracks include the machine-gun rush of "Tommy Gun", the anthemic "English Civil War" (transforming a traditional folk melody into a fist-raising statement), the warm nostalgia of "Stay Free", and the swaggering opener "Safe European Home". It remains one of the finest punk records ever pressed to wax.
This 2017 Columbia/Legacy reissue presents the album newly remastered from original tapes, pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl with replicated printed innersleeve artwork and a digital download card.
