Description
The Clash is the incendiary 1977 debut album that helped ignite punk rock and remains one of the most urgent, vital records ever made. Recorded in just three weekends for a mere £4,000, it captures a band burning with fury, purpose and raw energy — Joe Strummer and Mick Jones trading vocals over a relentless barrage of two-minute blasts, with Paul Simonon's bulldozing bass and Terry Chimes' locked-in drumming driving everything forward.
Originally released on CBS Records on 8 April 1977, the album reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and went on to become the best-selling import album of all time in the United States — a country where CBS initially refused to release it, deeming the sound not "radio friendly." History, of course, proved them spectacularly wrong.
The tracklist is a masterclass in concentrated power: the blistering opener "Janie Jones", the raw attack of "White Riot", the simmering anti-war anthem "London's Burning", and the reggae-influenced "Police and Thieves" — a cover of the Junior Murvin track that pointed toward the band's future genre-defying ambition. Closing track "Garageland" — written in direct response to a devastating NME review — remains one of the great defiant rallying cries in rock history.
This 2016 Columbia/Sony Music/Legacy reissue presents the album newly remastered, pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl, faithfully reproducing the original UK track listing and artwork.
