Description

Pornography is The Cure's landmark fourth studio album and the shattering conclusion to the "Dark Trilogy" that began with Seventeen Seconds (1980) and Faith (1981). Released on 4 May 1982, it remains one of the most intense and uncompromising records in rock history — a dense, cathedral-sized wall of sound built from churning guitars, cavernous drums and Robert Smith's howling, desperate vocals.

Recorded at RAK Studios in London from January to April 1982, the sessions took place under extraordinary pressure. The band were on the brink of collapse, with internal tensions, heavy drug use and Smith's own depression feeding directly into the album's suffocating atmosphere. The result is a record that sounds like it was made at the very edge — and it shows. Producer Phil Thornalley and co-producer Steve Nye captured the chaos and sculpted it into something genuinely extraordinary.

Opening track "One Hundred Years" sets the tone immediately — ten minutes of relentless intensity that announce this as unlike anything the band had made before. "The Hanging Garden", the album's only single, provides a rare moment of propulsive energy amid the darkness. "Siamese Twins" and "The Figurehead" are among Smith's most harrowing pieces of writing, while the title track closes the album in a state of near-total dissolution.

Ranked among Q Magazine's Best Gothic Albums of All Time and endlessly cited as a foundational text for goth, post-punk and alternative rock, Pornography has only grown in stature since its release. This 2016 Fiction Records/Polydor reissue has been remastered by Robert Smith himself, pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl, and includes a printed innersleeve with lyrics and a digital download voucher.
