Description
The Soft Parade is the fourth studio album by The Doors — Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore — released on 18 July 1969 on Elektra Records. By the time of its recording, Morrison's personal difficulties had left him less central to the songwriting process than on any previous Doors album, and the result is a genuinely collaborative record on which Krieger steps up with several of the album's most memorable moments. The production, overseen by long-time collaborator Paul A. Rothchild, incorporated full brass and orchestral arrangements for the first time in the band's catalogue, creating a richer and more layered sound that divided both fans and critics at the time of release.
The album contains some of the Doors' most commercially successful material. "Touch Me" — written by Krieger — became their biggest US hit since "Hello, I Love You", reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100. "Wishful Sinful" and "Tell All the People" further demonstrate Krieger's growing prominence as a songwriter, while Morrison's contributions include the brooding, extended "Shaman's Blues" and the sprawling eight-minute title track, which closes the album as a multi-part suite. The record reached number six on the Billboard 200. Over time its critical standing has been gradually reassessed.
