The Highlights is The Weeknd's first career-spanning compilation — an 18-track double LP drawing together the biggest and most defining moments from over a decade of genre-bending music. Released on 5 February 2021 via XO and Republic Records, it was timed to coincide with his headline performance at Super Bowl LV — the most-watched halftime show in history — and functions both as an ideal introduction for new listeners and as a definitive statement of one of the most remarkable careers in contemporary music.
The compilation spans the full arc of Abel Tesfaye's evolution as an artist: from the brooding, hypnotic R&B of "Wicked Games" and "The Morning" — drawn from the legendary House of Balloons mixtape that first brought him to global attention in 2011 — through to the synth-pop euphoria of "Blinding Lights" and "Save Your Tears" from the multi-platinum After Hours (2020). In between sit some of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed pop tracks of the decade.
The tracklist is a masterclass in sequencing. Disc one opens with four consecutive smashes from After Hours — "Save Your Tears", "Blinding Lights", "In Your Eyes" and "Can't Feel My Face" — before moving through the shimmering Daft Punk collaboration "I Feel It Coming" and the propulsive "Starboy". "Pray for Me" — his extraordinary collaboration with Kendrick Lamar from the Black Panther soundtrack — and the dark, atmospheric "The Hills" round out disc one alongside the sleek menace of "Heartless" and "Often".
