Collection: John Coltrane Vinyl Records

John Coltrane's catalogue stretches across barely a decade as a leader — from his Prestige sessions in the late 1950s through his Impulse! contracts and his death in 1967 — and reshaped jazz in every direction. Giant Steps in 1960 redefined harmonic complexity; A Love Supreme in 1965 redefined what spiritual seriousness could sound like on a jazz record; the later Impulse! work pushed into the free-jazz territory that the next generation of players built on.

The Atlantic and Impulse! pressings cut from the original Rudy Van Gelder tapes remain reference-quality recordings. The modern Acoustic Sounds and Verve Acoustic Sounds reissues are excellent.

Best John Coltrane Albums on Vinyl

A Love Supreme (1965)
— His masterpiece. The Classic Quartet (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones) at its peak. Essential.

Giant Steps (1960)
— The Atlantic record that reshaped jazz harmonic thinking. The title track alone changed how saxophonists learned the instrument.

My Favorite Things (1961)
— His first Impulse! statement. The title track — extended over 13 minutes on soprano sax — opened the door to modal jazz.

Blue Train (1957)
— His one date as a leader for Blue Note. Tight, hard-bop, beautifully recorded. Often cited as the best entry point.
