Collection: Frank Zappa Vinyl Records

Few catalogues are as wide as Frank Zappa's. Across roughly sixty official albums between 1966 and his death in 1993, he moved through doo-wop pastiche, free jazz, orchestral composition, satirical rock, Synclavier compositions and serious modern classical work without ever appearing to commit fully to any one mode. The records reward — even require — a long-form, album-side approach to listening.

The vinyl pressings of the late-60s and early-70s records on Bizarre/Reprise are particularly sought-after; the modern reissues from the Zappa Family Trust are uniformly well-mastered.

Best Frank Zappa Albums on Vinyl

Hot Rats (1969)
— His mostly-instrumental jazz-rock record. "Peaches en Regalia" alone is reason enough to own it.

Apostrophe (') (1974)
— His most accessible and best-selling record. "Cosmik Debris" and the title track.

Joe's Garage (1979)
— The rock opera in three acts. "Watermelon in Easter Hay" sits at its centre.

Sheik Yerbouti (1979)
— Long, varied, brilliantly played. "Dancin' Fool" and "Bobby Brown Goes Down".
