Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor's vehicle for some of the most ambitious rock music made since the 1990s. Reznor grew up in rural Pennsylvania, worked as an engineer at Right Track Recording in Cleveland, and used his after-hours studio access to record the 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine — an album that translated the industrial dance of Ministry and Cabaret Voltaire into something genuinely melodic.

The follow-ups were extraordinary. The Downward Spiral (1994) is a rock album of almost unprecedented density, layered with decaying noise and real emotional weight; The Fragile (1999) is a 23-track double album that moves between aggression and genuine beauty. In parallel, Reznor and Atticus Ross have reinvented themselves as film composers, winning Academy Awards for The Social Network and Soul, as well as scoring Gone Girl, Mank and others. NIN on vinyl is a masterclass in dynamic range — the quietest moments and the loudest moments in proximity need analogue width to breathe. His masterpiece. Closer, Hurt, Piggy, March of the Pigs, Eraser — a concept album about a man's disintegration, recorded in the house where the Manson murders took place. Dark, layered and genuinely beautiful. The Definitive Edition 2xLP is the essential pressing.

The Fragile (1999)
The vast double album that followed. The Way Out Is Through, We're in This Together, Into the Void, La Mer — 103 minutes of music that moves from industrial savagery to ambient beauty. Divisive on release and now considered one of the great rock albums of its era.

Pretty Hate Machine (1989)
The debut. Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, Down in It, Something I Can Never Have — the album that invented mainstream industrial rock. Less refined than what followed but full of raw ideas. The 180g remasters sound superb.

With Teeth (2005)
The return after five years. The Hand That Feeds, Only, Every Day Is Exactly the Same — tighter and more direct than The Fragile, and rightly considered a comeback record in the best sense. The 2xLP is beautifully mastered.

Year Zero (2007)
The concept album about a dystopian 2022. Survivalism, The Good Soldier, Capital G — built around an elaborate alternate-reality game that became a cult phenomenon in its own right. One of his sharpest conceptual records.
