Collection: The Police Vinyl Records – Synchronicity, Zenyatta Mondatta & Essential Albums on Vinyl
The Police are one of the finest power trios in rock history. Sting (bass, vocals), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums) came together in London in 1977 and produced, between 1978 and 1983, five albums that took reggae, punk energy and jazz harmony and compressed them into something unmistakably their own. Copeland's drumming is genuinely one of the most distinctive styles in rock; Summers' chord voicings are quietly revolutionary; Sting is Sting.
Synchronicity (1983) closed the run at the absolute peak — Every Breath You Take was the biggest single in the world that year — and the band split shortly after, unable to survive the internal tensions. Reunion tours in 2007-08 aside, those five studio albums are the whole story, and they are extraordinary. The Police on vinyl is essential — the reggae spatial effects, Summers' flanged chords, Copeland's treble-heavy kit are all designed to reward careful listening. The A&M originals and the recent 180g half-speed masters are both superb.

Best The Police Albums on Vinyl
Synchronicity (1983)
Their masterpiece. Every Breath You Take, Wrapped Around Your Finger, King of Pain, Synchronicity II — a record that contains one of the biggest hits of the decade alongside some of their most adventurous writing. The half-speed remastered 180g is the definitive version.
Zenyatta Mondatta (1980)
The third album, recorded in three weeks and the band's first UK number one. Don't Stand So Close to Me, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da, Driven to Tears — tighter than its predecessors and full of brilliant singles. Often considered their best album by the band themselves.
Reggatta de Blanc (1979)
The second album and the one where the reggae influence came fully to the fore. Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Bring on the Night — mass-market new-wave pop that still sounded unlike anything else.
Outlandos d'Amour (1978)
The debut. Roxanne, So Lonely, Can't Stand Losing You, Next to You — a raw, punky record made before the band had really found the sound they'd become famous for. Loose and thrilling.
Ghost in the Machine (1981)
The fourth album, recorded at AIR Studios Montserrat. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Spirits in the Material World, Invisible Sun — synthesisers enter the mix. A transitional record between Zenyatta Mondatta and Synchronicity.
