Ghost in the Machine is The Police's fourth studio album and the record that took the band to the very peak of their commercial and artistic powers. Originally released in October 1981, it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and became a multi-platinum seller on both sides of the Atlantic — a remarkable achievement for an album that pushed well beyond the boundaries of straightforward pop or rock.

Recorded at AIR Studios in Montserrat and Le Studio in Quebec, the album saw Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland broadening their sonic palette significantly — horns and synthesisers were introduced for the first time, the jazz and reggae influences that had always underpinned their sound became more pronounced, and the production, handled by the band themselves, was more ambitious than anything they had attempted before.

Three of rock's most enduring singles are here: the effervescent, irresistible "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (UK number one), the sombre, politically charged "Invisible Sun" (written in response to the Troubles in Northern Ireland), and the propulsive, bass-driven "Spirits in the Material World". Beyond the hits, the album rewards close listening — "Demolition Man" is a ferocious, jazz-inflected highlight (later covered by Grace Jones), while "Secret Journey" and the haunting "Darkness" showcase the band's deeper, more introspective side.

This 2019 A&M/Universal reissue has been mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering and pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl, individually sourced as part of the acclaimed Every Move You Make: The Studio Recordings series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the band's debut.
