Wheels of Fire is the third album by Cream and their most ambitious work, originally released as a double album split between studio recordings and live performances captured at the Fillmore and Winterland in San Francisco. It became the first platinum-selling double album in the United States.

The studio disc opens with White Room, one of the band's most enduring songs, its wah-wah guitar and orchestral arrangement setting a psychedelic tone. Politician and Sitting on Top of the World showcase the trio's blues-rock power. The live disc captures the band's extended improvisational approach at its peak: Crossroads is a ferocious, compressed reading of the Robert Johnson classic, while Spoonful stretches past sixteen minutes of interplay between Clapton's guitar, Bruce's bass and Baker's drums.
