Description

Time Out is one of jazz's genuine landmarks — the 1959 Columbia session in which Dave Brubeck and his quartet set out to compose entirely in time signatures that American jazz had, up to that point, largely left alone. What emerged is the record that took 5/4 into the mainstream with Take Five and made 9/8 swing on Blue Rondo À La Turk. More than sixty years on, it remains the best-selling jazz album of its era and a staple of any serious record collection.

The quartet — Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums — move between the urgent stride of Blue Rondo, the lyrical Strange Meadow Lark, the locked-in groove of Take Five (composed by Desmond, and the first million-selling jazz single), the trio-feel Three To Get Ready, Kathy's Waltz, Everybody's Jumpin' and the closing Pick Up Sticks. Seven tracks, under forty minutes, and still one of the most approachable routes into modern jazz ever pressed.
