Description

This Deutsche Grammophon release pairs two landmark concerto performances by the reclusive Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov, widely regarded as one of the greatest living pianists. The first disc presents Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488, recorded live at the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation on 30 January 2005 with Trevor Pinnock conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The second disc features Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30, recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 27 July 1995 with Yan Pascal Tortelier conducting the BBC Philharmonic.

The Mozart is poised and luminous, with Sokolov's crystalline touch particularly striking in the Adagio, one of Mozart's most searching slow movements. The Rachmaninoff is a formidable contrast -- the Third Concerto is the most technically demanding work in the standard piano repertoire, and Sokolov's 1995 Proms performance delivers both the raw power of the Allegro Ma Non Tanto and the lyrical depth of the Intermezzo before the explosive Finale. Two contrasting concertos from two centuries, united by one of the most distinctive pianistic voices of the modern era.
