Description

Mozart's Requiem in D minor, K. 626 is the composer's final work, famously left incomplete at his death in December 1791 and finished from his sketches by his pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr. The circumstances — the commission from an anonymous messenger, Mozart's conviction that he was writing his own funeral mass, his death during the Lacrimosa — have made this one of the most mythologised scores in the Western canon, but the music needs no embellishment: the twelve-note chromatic lament of the Kyrie fugue, the trumpet and trombone calls of the Tuba mirum, the driving Dies irae and the closing Lux aeterna remain some of the most immediate music Mozart ever set down.

Karajan's Requiem, featuring a Viennese-flavoured line-up of soloists — Wilma Lipp (soprano), Hilde Rössel-Majdan (contralto), Anton Dermota (tenor) and Walter Berry (bass) — with the Wiener Singverein on chorus, sits firmly in the grand Viennese tradition. Weighty, reverent, and given room to breathe across two LPs rather than squeezed onto a single disc.

This edition is a 2×LP stereo reissue on Vinyl Passion Classical, pressed for UK / European release in 2015.
