Description

Break Every Rule is Tina Turner's sixth solo studio album and the hugely successful follow-up to her landmark comeback record Private Dancer (1984). Released on 8 September 1986 via Capitol Records, it reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, number four on the US Billboard 200, and number one in both Germany — where it held the top spot for twelve weeks — and Switzerland. It sold over five million copies worldwide in its first year alone and spawned eight singles, making it one of the most commercially successful albums of her career.

Recorded at Mayfair Studios in London with Tina's vocals tracked separately at Studio Grande Armée in Paris, the album boasts one of the most remarkable guest rosters in 1980s pop. Phil Collins — who produced several tracks alongside his work with Genesis — plays drums on Side A; Bryan Adams contributes to and co-produces tracks on Side B; Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits plays guitar on two tracks; and David Bowie co-wrote the dazzling "Girls", which closes Side A. The result is a record of real variety and ambition, held together by the sheer force of Turner's vocal performances.

The lead single "Typical Male" — produced by the team of Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, who had also written "What's Love Got to Do with It" — peaked at number two in the UK and became one of the decade's defining pop-rock hits. "What You Get Is What You See" and "Two People" also reached the UK top 30, and "Back Where You Started" earned Turner her third consecutive Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female at the 1987 ceremony. The album was followed by one of the biggest world tours in history, culminating in a concert in Rio de Janeiro that drew over 180,000 people — at the time the largest paying audience ever assembled for a solo concert.

This 2022 Rhino/Parlophone remaster presents the album freshly remastered on a standard single LP.
