Foreign Affair is Tina Turner's seventh studio album and the triumphant conclusion to the extraordinary trilogy of records — alongside Private Dancer (1984) and Break Every Rule (1986) — that transformed her from a struggling solo artist into one of the biggest stars on the planet. Released on 2 October 1989 via Capitol Records, it reached number one in the UK, number one in Germany (where it spent over six months on the charts), number one in Switzerland and number one in Norway, while achieving multi-platinum certification across Europe, Canada and Australia. In the UK alone it sold over one million copies — making Tina Turner the first female artist to achieve this with two consecutive studio albums.

The album's centrepiece and crowning achievement is "The Best" — co-written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight and originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler — which Turner made so definitively her own that it has since become synonymous with her name and legacy. With its extraordinary final minute vocal crescendo, it remains one of the most uplifting and recognisable songs in rock history and is now one of the best-selling singles of all time in the UK. "I Don't Wanna Lose You" and "Steamy Windows" followed as major UK hits, while "Look Me in the Heart" and "Be Tender with Me Baby" showcased the gentler, more vulnerable side of her vocal range.
