Description

Private Dancer is Tina Turner's fifth solo studio album and one of the greatest comeback records in music history. Released on 29 May 1984 via Capitol Records, it propelled Turner from a period of personal and professional hardship into global superstardom — selling over 12 million copies worldwide, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart (where it spent 150 total weeks), and number three on the US Billboard 200 (where it stayed in the top ten for 39 consecutive weeks). In the US it was certified 5× Platinum; in the UK 3× Platinum; in Canada 7× Platinum.

The album was recorded in England with four separate production teams, each bringing a distinct sonic flavour while Turner's extraordinary voice held everything together. Rupert Hine produced the irresistible, synth-driven "Better Be Good to Me" — written by Holly Knight, Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn; Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh of Heaven 17 produced the sleek, danceable "Let's Stay Together"; Terry Britten produced the reggae-tinged "What's Love Got to Do with It"; and John Carter produced the haunting seven-minute title track, written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and featuring a guitar solo by Jeff Beck — one of the most distinctive and beautiful moments in 1980s pop.

At the 1985 Grammy Awards, Private Dancer won four Grammy Awards — including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "What's Love Got to Do with It", Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, and Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female. In 2020, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Slant Magazine called it "both a personal liberation and sonic redemption", establishing Turner "not only as a genuine diva, but a bona fide force of nature."

This 2015 Parlophone remaster is pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl and comes with a replica picture sleeve and lyric inner sleeve.
